Leeds Liverpool Canal Towpath Improvements
Improvements to the Leeds Liverpool Canal towpath are taking place in two phases
- Phase 1 – Kirkstall to Shipley – Complete
- Phase 2 – Silsden to Riddlesden (Airedale Greenway) – Construction started April 2018
Phase 1 – Kirkstall to Shipley
CityConnect, in partnership with the Canal & River Trust, have made significant improvements to sections of the towpath of the Leeds-Liverpool canal, from Leeds city centre through to Silsden. This work has included surfacing, access improvements and new signage.
The first phase is now complete and no further works will be taking place between Kirkstall and Shipley. We are looking to secure additional funds to continue the resurfacing works.
Phase 2 – Silsden to Riddlesden (Airedale Greenway)
Building on the canal towpath upgrades made in Phase 1, this scheme will involve the construction of an off- highway cycle route, with high quality surfacing, covering around 2.7km from Lodge Hill Bridge at Riddlesden Golf Club (Bridge 194) to Silsden Road Bridge (Bridge 191A).
Construction is now underway, with work starting on Monday 16 April 2018 with an estimated 16-week construction period. Construction is expected to finish by late July 2018.
The towpath will be closed in phases as follows:
Bridge 191a to Bridge 192 – 16 April 2018 to 20 July 2018
Bridge 192 to Bridge 193 – 21 May 2018 to 22 June 2018
Bridge 193 to Bridge 194 – 16 April 2018 to 20 July 2018

The scheme will enable the towpath to be used safely and comfortably by cyclists and pedestrians all year round. The towpath already provides a number of communities and towns within the Bradford District access to a continuous off highway route from Leeds City Centre to Skipton and the key employment and retail hubs surrounding them.
The material used to improve the towpath has been chosen according to the Canal and River Trust Towpath Design Standards 2013. It will be a natural compacted limestone surface. This has been used on some sections of the CityConnect 1 scheme and is well suited to a semi-rural environment such as this.
Public Consultation for Phase 2 took place from Friday 7th October 2016 until Friday 21st October 2016. There was strong support for the improvements from the local community.
