The Cycle Superhighway

The Cycle Superhighway between Leeds and Bradford opened in July 2016. This first phase (CS1) of Superhighway is just over fourteen kilometres of segregated cycle route between Leeds and Bradford, running from Leeds city centre along the A647 to the new Broadway shopping centre right in the heart of Bradford. Linking these two key cities provides people of all ages, ethnicities and status along the route with the opportunity to cycle and walk, away from the traffic.

The second phase (CS2) of the Superhighway runs between Leeds and Seacroft. In February 2018 some sections of this phase will be closed for improvements. Works will start at the Seacroft end and progress towards the city centre – see below for latest progress updates

These minor works are the result of a review of both phases and includes both Leeds and Bradford. The Leeds to Seacroft section (CS2) has been prioritised for changes to be made and the minor works have been viewed and approved by the CityConnect advisory group, made up of local stakeholders including members of the Leeds Cycling Campaign.

Improvements will be made to small elements of the route to better protect people cycling on the route and make the Cycle Superhighway even safer and easier to use. The changes will be made at the junctions below.

>. York Road/Hepton Court

>. York Road/Lyme Chase
26/02/18 – Work on the this junction begins. The team will then work their way into Leeds on the outbound carriageway

>. York Road/Old York Road

>. York Road/Farm Foods Entrance
23/02/18 – The highways team have now finished the first improvements on the Farmfoods site at the junction of York Road and A64. The site is kerbed and made safe, awaiting topping off on a date to be confirmed
26/02/18 – A Northern Gas Network team will be moving onto the site to fix a leak. It is not yet known how long this will take

>. York Road/Seacroft Hospital

>. York Road/Sutton Approach

>. York Road/Diadem Drive

>. York Road/ Hope inn Junction

At these junctions improvements will be made to pedestrian crossings and extra signage will be installed. Sections where the superhighway passes bus stops will be monitored for interactions between people on bikes and people getting off buses. Some closures of sections of the route may occur. Disruption will be minimised and there are other cycle-friendly routes available. Take a look at our online journey planner for route suggestions http://cyclemap.cyclecityconnect.co.uk/journey/.

These works are unrelated to the project delivering the CityConnect project in the centre of Leeds linking CS1 with CS2. More information about this project can be found on the project page

In the coming  years Leeds and Bradford will see increased levels of walking and cycling. This will give the region best opportunity to become less polluted, have a healthier population, create a safer urban environment and improve the potential for economic growth through access to employment and training.

Priorities have changed along the cycle superhighway route to make everyone’s journeys go more smoothly, for example there is green surfacing, bus stop diversions, new approaches to junctions, shared use sections and some more changes. Take a look at our new Guide to Changing Priorities on the Superhighway Booklet….and remember, whatever your journey, look out for each other.

We encourage you to take a look at the map below and go out and give the route a try, and Rediscover that Cycling Feeling
