People are being invited to join Wakefield District Cycle Forum for a Santa Cycle on the Castleford to Wakefield Greenway on Saturday 14 December.
Participants will meet at 9.45am for a 10am departure at Queens Mill, Castleford WF10 1JW.
There is the option to dress up and / or decorate your bike for the festivities.
There are a number of free bikes available to borrow, but these must be booked in advance via info@cycling-wakefield.org.uk.
Taking in traffic free routes and some quiet roads, the ride will be about three-hours long, travelling at an easy-going pace and suitable for beginners, families and anyone looking to build their confidence.
Free light refreshments will be available on the day.
The team behind the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s CityConnect programme, aimed at encouraging more people to travel by bike or on foot, has joined forces with the cycle forum to celebrate the opening of its new cycling and walking bridge over the Hallam Line on the Castleford to Wakefield Greenway.
The Santa Cycle will stop for photos on the bridge at 10.20am.
The new bridge is part of a £1.2m scheme, which is being delivered through the CityConnect programme in partnership with Wakefield Council and Sustrans.
Construction has been underway on the route to provide a traffic-free link between Castleford and Methley by extending the Castleford Greenway over the new bridge across the Hallam Line.
The new bridge, which is 32m long and 3m wide, was lifted into place earlier on this year.
The first section of the new Castleford to Wakefield Greenway, a 2km stretch between Fairies Hill Lock and Methley Bridge in Castleford, opened in March 2018.
When complete, the Castleford to Wakefield Greenway will create a 16km route by providing missing links in existing infrastructure.
The Castleford Greenway is part of Route 69 in the National Cycle Network, which was created by Sustrans and includes more than 16,500 miles of cycling and walking routes across the UK.
