Walking Case Study – Yvonne

Yvonne is a 56 year-old single parent who has lived in the Beeston area for almost 50 years.  Her sixteen year old daughter has Asperger’s’ syndrome and a learning disability.  They are now both active members of a walking group set up as part of the go:walking project and have seen many benefits, both physically and mentally.

Yvonne has several health issues and has been using walking to help lose weight.  She has now reached her target weight which has great benefits for her health and confidence.  Yvonne also attends other community groups with her daughter like the Health for All Inside/out project, run on a Tuesday evening.  Attending both these groups has helped her to make friends in the community and become healthier.  At a recent diabetic review the nurse was very impressed at Yvonne’s confidence and gradual weight loss – due mainly to receiving social support on the weekly walking activities.
