The Ovenden Sports and community Arena (OSCA) in North Halifax have developed a 1K walk around their Centre as part of the go:walking project. Local residents Derek & Marion use the site on a regular basis. Derek & Marion have always walked their dog Stella on the four field’s site, come rain or shine, sometimes several times in one day.
Since the introduction of the 1K walk, Derek & Marion have increased the distance they walk on the site. The 1K walk is now marked out this provides a visual guide for them to walk around. This has given them the motivation to do an extra lap or two. Now if they have walked the course 3 times they know it equates to 3 Kilometres and provides a greater sense of achievement and helps with goal setting in their regular walks. The pair aim to gradually build up the distance they walk each day at a pace that’s good for them.
