Working with Schools

The morning school run is on average only a mile and a half, but if you’ve ever been near school gates at this time, you’ll know that many choose to drive to school – which in turn causes issues with congestion and dangerous parking.

At the moment, only 1 in a 100 primary school children cycle to school, compared to 1 in every 2 Danish kids. With the completion of the Cycle Superhighway, we’re encouraging and supporting families to try another way of getting to school – a fun, active and healthy choice, such as cycling or walking.

We’re helping to install secure bike parking at schools along the route, working with local instructors to get kids out on the route during school time, working with teachers to promote active travel in the classroom and working with Headteachers to make ‘Bike Friendly Schools’.

Encouraging kids to cycle today will enable them to travel healthily and independently for the rest of their lives.

If you are a member of a local community group and would like to get involved in walking and cycling or encouraging others to do so please get in touch to see how we can help. please email cityconnect@west-yorks-ca.gov.uk
